Job Description
Salem State University values, celebrates and appreciates diversity in all its forms and endeavors to create a space that reflects the campus community population which it serves. Our students come to Salem State University from 38 states and 48 countries and reflect the demographics of the greater Boston community in which we live. We are passionate about providing an experience for them and our fellow staff and faculty, where everyone can feel supported while they explore, learn, and celebrate their identities, similarities, and differences. We welcome you to come celebrate with us and become a member of our community.
The per diem counselor is a part-time, non-benefitted position with the counseling and health services clinical team, delivering psychological services to members of the Salem State student body and providing consultation to the staff and community. It is open to those with a masters degree in clinical or counseling psychology, mental health counseling, or social work. The position is a temporary appointment. Funding is potentially available for up to 29 hours a week and scheduled between the hours of 9-5 M-F. Applicants should indicate availability and desired number of hours or range of hours they would like to be considered for.
- Provide psychological care in the individual therapy format with SSU undergraduate and graduate students. Therapists should be comfortable working in a brief therapy model, generally meeting biweekly and supporting students for 1-2 semesters.
- Provide consultation for CHS staff and campus staff/faculty, as needed.
- Related case management duties include coordinating with students, their families, off campus care providers, and on campus support services and documenting contacts. This can include assistance with referrals for students who need longer term or more intensive services.

While rare, the counselor could also be responsible for coordinating involuntary psychiatric holds (“Section 12”) with staff eligible to apply for such holds, or in coordination with other CHS clinicians and local emergency services.
- Follow all related departmental and university protocols and procedures, including standards for documentation and emergencies.

- Experience providing clinical services to diverse populations, including people of color and LGBTQIA individuals, and an ability to respect differences in mental health care needs across cultures and other identities
